The Gadfly is accepting applications between December 13th, 2009 and January 3rd, 2010. Please read position descriptions closely before applying, and keep in mind that staff positions are year-long commitments. All interested undergraduates (CC, SEAS, BC and GS) are welcome to apply. Feel free to apply for more than one position.

POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:


General Editors:

Editor-in-Chief: The Editor-in-Chief runs all aspects of the publication and has the final say on all editorial and layout decisions. If the Editor-in-Chief does not want to run an article, s/he may choose not to. In the end, the Editor-in-Chief is responsible for what is published in the publication, and thus wields the power to have the final say on the magazine’s content. The Editor-in-Chief will act as The Gadfly’s President in regards to dealings with the Activities Board at Columbia. 10-15 hrs/week.

Managing Editor: The Managing Editor aids the Editor-in-Chief and is to be present at all meetings with section editors and staff. S/he is responsible for editing articles and helping the Editor-in-Chief with editorial, layout, staffing and production decisions. The Managing Editor will act as The Gadfly’s Vice President in regards to dealings with the Activities Board at Columbia. 5-10 hrs/week.


Section Editors:

Features Editor: Solicits, approves and edits all feature articles. Must solicit and approve at least four features articles. S/he checks at least once a week with writers during the editing period to ensure The Gadfly receives high quality, well-edited features. 3-5 hours/week.

Deputy Features Editor: Works with Features Editor to solicit and edit all features articles. 3 hours/week.

Criticism Editor: Solicits, approves and edits The Gadfly’s reviews and interviews. Must solicit at least one book review and one interview in addition to another piece of criticism. S/he checks at least once a week with writers during the editing period to ensure The Gadfly receives high quality, well-edited criticism. 3-5 hours/week.

Deputy Criticism Editor: Works with Criticism Editor to solicit and edit all criticism articles. 3 hours/week.

Shorts Editor: Solicits, approves and edits all short pieces, such as humor pieces, short stories, and frontmatter. Responsible for coordinating and collecting information for the frontmatter such as upcoming courses, surveys, and polls. S/he checks at least once a week with writers during the editing period to ensure The Gadfly receives high quality, well-edited columns. 3-5 hours/week.

Deputy Shorts Editor: Works with Shorts Editor to solicit and edit all material for shorts. 3 hours/week.


Managers:

Arts Editor: Commissions, compiles and scans all artwork and illustrations for the magazine. Completes all polishing of images in Adobe PhotoShop. Provides the Layout Editor with digital versions of all images. Assists the Layout Editor in laying out the magazine if necessary. Responsible for the magazine’s cover. 1-5 hours/week. Layout week: 10 hours/week.

Deputy Arts Editor: Works with Arts Editor to commission, compile, scan, and polish all artwork and illustrations for the magazine. 3 hours/week. Layout week: 5-10 hours/week.

Layout Editor: Designs and completes the layout of the magazine in Adobe InDesign. Works with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, especially during the production period. Works with the Arts Editor and Technology Director as needed. Final layout is approved by the Editor-in-Chief. Layout week: 35 hours/week.

Deputy Layout Editor: Works with Layout Editor to design and complete the layout of the magazine. Layout week: 35 hours/week.

Business and Finance Manager: All monetary concerns will be taken care of by the Business and Finance Manager in accordance with the Student Affairs Central Business Office guidelines and University policies. The Business and Finance Manager is The Gadfly’s principal agent in accessing the student organizational account with the University. The Business and Finance manager is in charge of getting estimates from printers, choosing a printer with the Editor-in-Chief, selling advertising space, coordinating grant efforts, managing the business staff and paying the printer. The Business and Finance Manager should also be the point person for any advertisers who have questions in accordance with ABC, SACBO, and University policies. S/he must attend ABC treasurer’s training upon election. S/he will act as The Gadfly’s treasurer in regards to dealings with the Activities Board at Columbia. 1-5 hours/week.

Deputy Business and Finance Manager: Works with Business and Finance Manager to complete tasks outlined above. 1-5 hours/week.

Technology Director: Works on the design of the website along with the Editor-in-Chief, Arts Editor and Layout Editor. Responsible for revamping and updating the website when new issues are released and as needed throughout the year. Responsible for updates to the website’s news section. 1-5 hours/week.

Copy Editor: Reads over final drafts and the proof of the magazine to look for typos, grammatical errors, and mistakes in accordance with the Constitution of The Gadfly. Copy editing week: 6 hours/week.
